See the different sides of Prince Namor proud king, valiant hero -- and arrogant, unfaithful lover. Years ago, when Namor was young, he fell in love with a surface woman, only to break her heart. But what is her connection to the new generation of X-Men?
Namor The First Mutant 20102011 #5 eBook Stuart Moore Ariel Olivetti Brian Ching Rick Ketcham Don Ho Craig Yeung
Supported by exquisite, painting-like artwork, "Namor First Mutant" # 5 offers the opening salvo of a contemporary, new Sub-Mariner storyline. Now a member of the X-Men, Namor is presented as a complex, if not maturing scoundrel, whose heroics don't always justify his behavior around humans, including the flashbacks to his estranged wartime romance with NYC policewoman Betty Dean. However, it should be noted that the lush "Victory at Sea"-like cover image of Namor and his true mortal love, Betty, during a World War II sea battle, is deceptive (really, it's a bait & switch). There isn't any epic love story (nor any WWII action) to be found here, as Betty's presence is little more than a cameo. The wartime backstory instead hints at Namor's strife with Betty's skeptical roommate, Alice. In the present-day, a 16-year old mutant female with aquatic abilities encounters some baddies off the Hawaiian coast. Meanwhile, the past reveals the break-down of Namor's relationship with Betty due to his increasingly long, unexplained absences. In 1947, after an indignant Betty finally storms out on him, there is a very unsettling implication of Namor's instant philandering with Alice, now a married young mother.
Decades later, a wiser, haunted Namor acknowledges his bad judgment from days past to a now-elderly Alice in a chance encounter in Hawaii. Yet, once the Sub-Mariner discovers the link between Alice and the teenage girl, Namor's past indiscretion possibly takes on a new meaning. Hence, this story sets ups the girl's search for her mysterious destiny. For the full story, please check out the "Namor First Mutant, Vol. 2: Namor Goes to Hell" trade paperback.
Overall, although I would have much preferred a story actually justifying the cover image, "Namor First Mutant" # 5 is worth reading, at least for a glimpse at how multi-dimensional the Sub-Mariner can be.
Rating: 3.5 *** /5 stars.
